I got a surprise in the mail yesterday from the folks at LaraBar. They just launched a new line of bars called ALT. It’s the first bar’s they’ve released with added protein. Unlike other protein bars on the market they are using peas as a protein source. While these bars, unlike the regualr ones, these are not 100% paleo approved. The peas being legumes keep them from being paleo however they are still way more healthy that a cliff bar and delicious. The bars have 10g of protein, 9 ingredients, are Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Non-Gmo, Kosher and Vegan. With the facts down lets get down to the bars.
Lemon Pound Cake
Up first is the Lemon Pound Cake, which was my favorite and was quickly devoured. The ingredients in the bar are: Dates, Almonds, Pea Protein, Brown Rice Syrup, Brown Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Vanilla Extract and natural flavors. The lemon flavor was excellent. The dates gave it the familiar Larabar flavor and texture. I found the bar to be maybe a bit too sweet for me but delicious.
Cinnamon Apple Crisp
This was my second favorite bar. The cinnamon and apple flavor really pop out in this bar. Cinnamon and apple were made to go together In my opinion. Larabar nailed the flavor with this one. The ingredients in this one are: Dates, Pea Protein, Ground Peanuts, Brown Rice Syrup, Brown Rice Flour, Dried Apples, Sunflower Oil, Cinnamon and Natural Flavors. It must have been the peanuts in this bar that gave it a crunch texture that was great.
Pumpkin Pie
YES! Finally a Pumpkin Pie Flavor from Larabar. I remember contacting them and saying how much a Pumpkin Pie flavor would be. I don’t want to say I’m responsible for this bars creation but I am very happy to finally have them produce it. I was ecstatic to see this bar and had very high hopes for it. It was delicious without a question. I liked how it was not made overly sweet. It had that wonderful pumpkin pie flavor that I know and love. I think the bar is good but could use a little more work. I want to flavor to pop a but more. Working with pumpkin can be troublesome thought. I remember how my pumpkin bars turned out. I think I may pick up more of these pumpkin bars though. I love the pumpkin flavor so much.
Peanut Butter Cookie
This was my least favorite by far. I personally didn’t like the flavor at all and gave the bar away after my taste sample. The friend I gave it to however really liked it. Maybe it was that my mother would always bake peanut butter cookies when I was a child and I really didn’t like them much then either. I will be skipping this flavor in the future.
Final Thoughts
This is definitely an interesting new line of bars. I still prefer the regular LaraBars however will be picking up some of the Pumpkin Pie bars for Go Bags. I like that these bars have added protein over the normal ones. They are by far the tastiest and healthiest protein bars I’ve had. I wold highly recommend checking them out.
