Today I’m going to share with you a project I’ve been working on. I’m not a huge fan of knot tying. It’s definitely an area to improve upon. So I’ve looked into making an easier and faster suspension. I’ve made some real progress in and have a working demo I’ll share with you today.
I saw a video on using climbing rings to quickly hang and tension a hammock. That system looks great but I had a hard time finding climbing rings. Most of the ones I found in the net were too pricey. i was walking around Lowe’s looking for something comparable and cheap. I came across Blue Hawk O-Ring’s. These things are supposed to be used for choke collars, purse and bag hardware, horse bridals and belts. I bought four of the 1-1/2 and four the 2in ones. The weight rating for the 1.5in ones are for 265 pounds. That’s good enough for hanging a hammock. They cost $1.47 a piece which comes out much cheaper than climbing rings.
The way it works is to loop the rope through the hole and around both rings then in between them and once again around. I allows you to pull tension but wont go the opposite way. I had a little trouble getting it work correctly and took a few try’s to get it set up right. Then for good measure I tie a loose knot on the end. Once I had it set correctly I didn’t slip at all and I was able to good tension on it.
The advantage of this system is how fast you can set it up under any circumstance. It would excel in a low light situation. It’s easy and would have no learning required, anyone could hang a hammock this way.
For a trial run I was pretty happy with the o rings. I need more testing of them before I would recommend everyone go try it. Also there is a warning that these are not meant to support human weight. I am fine with the risk and am sure they will perform well. How do you hang your hammock? Let me know in the comments
