This week Couch Potato Mike finally joins us. He recounts his recent vacation and the relevant survival info. I discuss a few ideas for staying safe while on vacation.

If you plan to carry your handgun while on vacation knowing the reciprocity laws is very important. Many states honor each others carry permits. Some don’t play nice. If you are vacationing in Chicago or New Jersey best leave the firearms at home.

If your state CCW isn’t honored in many other states there is a solution. I know some states refuse to honor Vermont’s lack of a CCW needed. Florida though offers non resident licenses. I think that  Carry Academy offers the Florida course online.

Swapping your wallet to the front pocket is another great tip.

This week I cover my basic Bug out timeline. The shit has hit the fan. Now what? During this critical time you need to act fast. Like most other aspects of prepping prior planning is key. Having a bug out plan that includes a checklist will help.

I go through all the things I could think of doing to have a successful bugout. The list will get altered based on several factors. The time you have to leave, the severity of the disaster and season are the big ones. The less time you have the less you can do.

The severity of the disaster and time till occurrence are the first things to consider. If riots are happening getting out quick is important. They shouldn’t last more than a few weeks though and then you can return home. If a meteor is coming to destroy the earth in an hour thats completely different.

Whether you think you will ever return is also something to think about. If you wont ever come back there’s less you have to worry about. It also makes you more prone to take more with you.

The more things you have in place to go before hand the faster you can go. Having to search around for important items could cost you your life.

Camping Basics Part 2

This week James continues our  camping basics series. The main topics covered are

Food, water and energy.

I talk about the different kinds of food to bring with you on a camping trip. How I will always bring fresh food for the first day. I usually bring steak or hamburgers frozen for the first day. After that I switch to either freeze dried meals or diy dehydrated ones.

Often I will bring salami and summer sausages. I like to get smaller ones that can be eaten in a single sitting. I not too worried about them going bad in a day or two but they taste best fresh.

I cover a few ways to purify water when camping. I talk about what works and what I don’t like. Boiling is my prefered method to make water safe to drink. Followed by tincture of iodine 2%. To be the filters are too expensive and have higher chances of breaking. Same thing goes for the steripen. Too many parts to get broken.

On energy I like to bring backup batteries with me. They make many decent rechargeable phone energy packs. I also covered the Solio solar charger and the power pot. Both work to keep your cell phone up and running to take pictures.

If I left out anything leave a comment down below. I’m excited to get outside and get camping soon!

Camping Basics Part 1

Camping Basics

This is a solo week after the two week break. James got hit with a sore throat and couldn’t talk and Mike went to Disney Land. I am back with a show on camping. I cover a few of the basics of camping in this part 1.

The focus of part one is on shelters and fire. I cover a few of the types of shelter and their strengths and weaknesses. Ending on why everyone should just own a hammock.

In the fire section I talk about how to make a fire. What tools to use, favorite tinder. I talk about two methods of building a fire. My prefered way is to build a fire teepee. For me it just works the best.

Smart Phone Apps For Survival

This week Mike and I talk about how to use smart phone apps for survival. Now that everyone has a smartphone on them why not use it as a survival tool. Many of the apps can and should be used as additions to stand alone devices. Phones can become damaged or run out of charge. A good compass does not need to be charged. But there’s no reason to not have a compass app on your phone.

Even without service many of these tools will still work. One of my favorite is the Serval mesh app. It creates a local area network to send and receive phone calls and texts on the network. As long as there is wifi signal between the devices you can make calls. It does not have to be internet connected. In fact one device can be used to create the ad hoc wifi network.  The only problem is distance that way.

A flashlight app is another must have app for survival. It’s a decently bright light with you everywhere you go. Even if you carry a dedicated ecd light an extra light is good. You can leave one light on strobe mode to help find your way back to camp.
