Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil
A while back the good folks at Tropical Traditions sent me a jar of coconut oil for review. I have used it a while now. I’m finally ready to do the review. I’ll also go over some reasons why coconut oil is a must have prep.
Fat’s are an often overlooked prep. Many store their beans, rice and wheat. All stores of carbohydrate. Easily storable. Protein has options too. Mountain house meat and beef jerky are options. For fats people usually grab some things of vegetable oil. They might get olive oil on the higher end. Neither are the best option.
Just storing calorie is not enough. You could store nothing but snickers and twinkies. Junk food is cheap and last a long time. Eating it though you will not last a long time. We need to make smarter choices in our food storage. Coconut oil is one easy way to do that.
Coconut Oil
You may have noticed that coconut oil is showing up more now. I remember a few years ago no one used coconut oil. It was the oddball in the oil section of the store. It was also expensive. Not the most expensive oil I’ve bought. Check out Macadamia nut oil to go broke. Choices were not so great either. There was only the one tub of coconut oil available. It was lumpy and flavorless.
People are becoming wise to oils now. Vegetable oil is terrible for you. Just think about getting oil from a vegetable. Have you ever eaten any vegetable and thought “Wow this is oily”? I have not. They use chemical to get the oil from vegetables. Olive oil is better in theory. If you can find an honest company. Most of the olive oil imported is a blend of cheaper oils. Add to the rancid oil fills the store shelves. Yes it has a 1 year expiration date and will begin to break down after that.
From all my research Coconut oil does not have any expiration date. It will not break down into a disgusting mess. Unlike canola oil coconut oil is not from GMO crops. For us preppers a high calorie food with no shelf life is invaluable. Coconut oil has some amazing health benefits too. I’m not a doctor and can not make claims about it. You are responsible to make your own conclusions.
Coconut oil is extremely valuable for ketosis. Ketosis is the metabolic state of burning fat as the primary fuel. Coconut oil, containing high amounts of medium chain triglycerides (MCT), can only be burned with ketones. Your body will make them in response to the coconut oil. If you are trying to be in ketosis this will help boost it. If not then you will get some of the benefits.
Coconut oil has about a million other uses as well. I like to use it as a fire starter in my kits. Not only will it start a fire but I can oil my cookware with it for frying. You can use it as a skin and lip balm.
Tropical Traditions
So what did I think about the Tropical Traditions brand? First I noticed it was much smoother. When it is liquid it is clear. Other coconut oil is darker in color and hazy. When solid it is much soft. I’ve had coconut oil become a brick when my apartment is cold. Tropical Traditions remains smooth and soft.
Also different is the taste and aroma. Unlike competitors Tropical Traditions has a taste and smell. It taste like coconut. I tried a spoon of plain Tropical traditions and could clearly taste coconut. I enjoyed that it had a great taste. I can see it not being great for everything though. Having a flavorless oil for some recipes is better. In the ones I’ve so far it has added a great flavor. In the coconut chicken curry soup it was amazing.
For those reasons I will be stocking up on Tropical Traditions virgin coconut oil. Better taste and quality win.
