I was at Whole Foods the other day picking up ingredients to a project I’m working on. While there I decided to pick up a few Lara Bars. I was looking around at the other energy bars and one caught my eye. It was Paleo Simplified Energy Bars. They had me at Paleo. A quick glance over the package and I decided to pick it up. There were two flavors to choose from. I went with the nutty fruit bliss (Blue Wrapper). I think the price was between the $2~$3 range. A few other bars caught my eye as well so expect reviews soon. So let’s open the Paleo Simplified Energy Bars and eat it.
Paleo Simplified Energy Bars
I used to love cliff bars. I had them stuffed in bags. I had them in my car. They are what I took on day hikes. Since going paleo I had to ditch them. They have a lot of junk in them I no longer eat. Moving away from them I didn’t have many options at the time. Lara bars became my new go to. Not all but some flavors were ok. To find a new product I can eat is exciting. The Paleo Simplified Energy Bars say they are Gluten free, soy free and have superfoods in them. Ok let’s flip it over and see that is all in this.
Ingredients
- Pitted Dates.
- Unsulphured Apricots.
- Cherries.
- Cashews.
- Raisins.
- Organic Pumpkin Seeds.
- Organic Goji Berries.
- Unsweetened Coconut.
- Egg White Protein Powder.
- Spirulina.
So all real foods on the list. No artificial ingredients. Normally I like my ingredient list shorter. With the paleo simplified bars having whole foods and superfoods I am ok. The nutritional facts are 8g of fat, 28 grams of carbs and 7g protein. Paleo Simplified Energy Bars marketed as a recovery bar. In that it fit’s the bill. Normally I like the macronutrients fat heavy followed by protein. After a workout though getting the carbs into the muscles is important.
Taste
Now on to the important part. What do these taste like. The bars are very dense and firm. Lara bars and my own creations are softer. The first flavor I noticed was the goji berries. Which I mistook for cranberries. The coconut was very prominent as well. The rest of the flavors were subdued. Not a bad thing though since goji taste great. The Paleo Simplified Energy Bars flavor a little on the sweet side for me. I ate it right after a crossfit workout and pretty much inhaled it. I had a friend try it and she liked it as well. For her the goji was the main taste. She didn’t even taste the coconut.
I like the Paleo Simplified Energy Bars a lot. If you need a recovery bar for post workout and want it paleo I recommend this. In a pack or a camping trip these would also shine. My only change would be the increase protein making it a more complete post workout bar. As it is it needs pairing with protein for full recovery. Also it’s a bit on the pricey side. I see it more as a recovery oops prep. If you forget to bring something post workout grab one of these and eat.
