For the end of week three I have a second AR cleaning tool from the great Folks over at Tactical Tolerance. The Talon is designed to scrap carbon build up from the hard to reach lugs. The Talon tool head is made from 400 series stainless steel. The steel was chosen for it’s brittleness. The tool is designed to break instead of bending and possible getting stuck in the chamber. If one of the talons does break off there are still 7 more. The Talon is 100% made in the USA and is 100% guaranteed for life.
In getting this for review I found another part of my AR that I didn’t even know needed cleaning. After I guess I’ll be getting one of these since it seems that the alternative is dental picks… Using this tool was as simple as could be and I had the lugs cleaned in less time than it took me to remove the bolt carrier and charging handle. The Talon comes with a great set of instructions that you will only need to read once and barely at that.
Using the Talon is as simple as:
- Remove the bolt carrier and charging handle.
- Insert the Talon until the yellow witness marks are inside the upper receiver.
- Stick a finger through the ejection port and press the tool shaft back slightly.
- Pull the Talon back gently and rotate.
Each full rotation of the tool scrapes the lug eight times. The Talon head has a patent pending design to scrap, and trap the carbon for easy removal. Make sure that you don’t pull back too hard. The tool does not need a strong pull to work and it could slip out and cut your fingers up.
I was surprised to see that my lug was not very dirty. What carbon there was came off really easy from the cleaning I did at the beginning of the week.
