As the month continues to fly by and the National Preparedness Month of Giveaways draws to a close I have one more book from Knowledge Publications. I have a copy of Nuclear War Survival Skills, the definitive book on the subject. This book i almost 300 pages of densely packed information. In the very limited time I had with the book I just scratched the surface of the book. Which is unfortunate with all the nuclear talk going on. It is packed with pictures and diagrams. The book covers topics of: Myths and facts, Communications, Evacuation, Pre-Crisis Preparations, Fallout and much much more!
Like I said I didn’t have time to read this cover to cover. Two section stuck out as particularly useful. While I enjoyed Other section like the Food and water sections and improvised clothing and protection items. My favorite two were the chapter on “The dangers from Nuclear Weapons: Myths and Facts” and the appendices which were instruction on building survival shelters.
Some of the myths this book expelled were:
- A Russian nuclear attack on the United States would completely destroy all American cities.
- So much food and water will be poisoned by the fallout that people will starve and die even in fallout areas where there is enough food and water.
- That if the US and Russia went to nuclear war the entire human race would be exterminated.
- That after a nuclear war we will be plunged into an unsurvivable “nuclear winter”. (a discredited theory by the way)
The section is packed with these and many more Myths that were were all lead to believe truth. The long fact replies to the myths are very well written with many citations. My favorite out of them all were the total annihilation and nuclear winter. Both being ingrained from birth. I took it for granted that nuclear winter was a cold hard fact.
The sections on shelters, and shielding were also favorites. I like the inclusion of a common man solutions to nuclear fall out. Including a simple shelter dug out by two college girls in 35 hours. You don’t need a “Doomsday bunker” buy a case of beer and invite your buddies over for a hole digging party. I know my friends wouldn’t even question it. The diagrams in the appendices are great. Easy to follow instructions on things like a homemade shelter venting pump, an above ground ridge pole structure and more. The appendices is easily a book on its own.
Although nuclear war is pretty far down on my list of worries facing any possible fallout is not an impossibility. How close do you live to a nuclear power plant? They are pretty common and things do go wrong. So although It’s not a top priority knowledge and reference are always welcome.
